The Amber Spyglass
Philip Pullman
The Fall
The Amber Spyglass is the final novel in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. Like the first two novels, it is an extraordinarily creative story. And the full-cast audiobook by Listening Library is well done. I assume you've read the first two books -- it would be a bad idea to attempt The Amber Spyglass without. If so, you already know that His Dark Materials is about religion, specifically about a religion that looks very like Christianity, and that the view of Christianity presented by His Dark Materials is negative. You also by now know that a love story between Lyra and Will is coming. It may therefore not surprise you to learn that The Amber Spyglass is about Eden and The Fall.
It is about much more than that. This is not a short book, and it is full of event, about which I can say little without spoiling.
The Fall is the central moment, and it is extraordinarily well done. Especially in audiobook form, it gave me that very rare feeling of sublimity that one sometimes experiences in the best of literature.
